Hey all! I am new to HCRU but not to crabbing. I have been crabbing for 5 years, and some of you may know me from PetsHub forums, CrabStreetJournal forums, and Epicurean Hermit forums! Do any of you'all know where I can find a Cavipes??

Welcome to the forums Ashley.
Five years is a good long stretch of time to be a crabber. I hope you've got a lot of tips on hand, because I'm still a bit green myself.

Hi, and welcome to the forum! As for finding a Cav ... there's not really a good way to get one. Most people seem to find them at Petco -- one or maybe two mixed in with the other species. You just have to know what you're looking for, because the people at the pet store definitely won't!

Hmmm... yeah. My Petco doesnt sell anything but PPs. One store around here gets Ruggies, and E's. But I had to strive with Petco to order Straws.(it took pestering them long enough) They are difficult to come by as it is! Since I live in dinky Oklahoma, everything is hard to get. O_o So it looks like I'm limited to the internet I heard on here about this CrabShack website. Do they carry Cavs? Do they have Indos, and Rugs, too?? And I tried to visit the website and they have this page come up that says they're updating. Do you know how long this will take?

Sorry, I'm more than a mite blabby if you haven't noticed. If you know about this website, I need more info. Thanks!! Ashley

P.S. Is that a white Ruggie in your avatar?? It is SO cool!

Hi HermieMaster5,

Welcome to the forum. The Hermit Shack will not be open for a while, but I thought I would meantion that we will not be shipping live crabs. The store will be based out of Canada, and I doubt they would let them across the board, armed as they are. Sorry bad joke. Might I suggest you check out Hermits Direct. While I have never ordered, I know some people who have, and they were very happy with their order.

Ahhh... HermitsDirect no longer ships either. I tried and they decided to no longer ship in the middle of my order... thanks anyway. Does anybody else know?? Please, I'm kind of distressed! I think I just had a crab die from cannibalism while molting. I didn't realise she was molting, and she got eaten. So... I can't find exotic species at Petco, either. I really wanted a Cav, cause I didn't have one. DOES ANYBODY ELSE KNOW ANYTHING??!??!!??

Cavies are hard to find. Even when Hermits direct was shipping they never had them in stock that I know of. You just have to keep your eyes peeled. Try little mom & pop pet stores, Aquariums, places the specialize in lizards & exotic pets, and don't give up on your local Petco either. They get different things in all the time. I see ruggies there quite often, and I actually found my cavie at a Petco (thought he was a ruggie at the time). So keep checking.

Yeah... my dumb little Oklahoma Petco doesn't get a whole lot. A place down here called Alligator Alley sometimes gets Rugs, and Josette's Pets rarely gets Indos. I'll think I'll keep my eyes out on these stores. Thanks!!

Another place that supposedly carries Ecuadorians and Indos is http://www.reptilecity.com. I say supposedly because I wanted to try ordering Es and Indos from them, but both times I called to confirm they had them in stock (their site claimed they did at the time) they did not in fact have any. Right now they list them as out of stock, but you could always call and ask if/when they plan to get more, I guess.

By the way, I live in the fourth-largest city in the US and cannot find Es anywhere. Actually, you can't get ruggies or Indos around here any more either.

And yep, that's a white Ruggie in my avatar. Sadly, he has passed on, but he was really beautiful.

I got my 3 cavipes at Petland.. they usually have a whole huge thing of crabs, PP's, E's, the exceptionally rare strawberry, but you can also get the Indo's, Ruggies, and as I discovered upon observation in the iso.. cavipes. Hermits at Petland are expensive though. So be prepared to be shocked at the prices, also have on hand plenty of natural shells, because most of theirs are in painted.. but given time and a large selection they swap out within 2 or 3 weeks.
