My petsmart and petco are really good. we went to other pet shops and they had very little sand if they had any. petsmart and petco had good setups and nice clean tanks and the crabs where healthy

Our Petsmart looks better than our Petco. Both only offer fresh water.
We had 4 die until we got a batch that was healthy. We had one DOA...so that makes 5. I do not know if any other stores sell hermit crabs. My son saw the hc at Petco and fell in love.
The one thing they have is the 14 day guarantee.
I am glad your PetCo is a good one.
The one in my city only sells natural shell ones...the one we got ours from was the next city over. We just happened to be in that area when we stopped in for a dog leash. The conditions are the same though...not enough water, not enough substrate, only 1 water and commercial food...They do have huts and plants...so they are trying...I guess.
Better than the Walmart in a cup. Something I have not seen out here yet.

I read somewhere that it is OKAY to have only fresh water served to PPs (which is what they mainly carry) and that salt water is optional. If this is true, then I guess it isn't too bad that they don't offer salt water.

I wonder if most pet stores keep the amount of substrate minimal to discourage burying and molting. No one is going to buy a crab they can't see!

The last time I looked for hermies at Petsmart, the lady actually moved the water dish so I could see the crabs that were hiding out. Both of my commercial pet stores have okay conditions. Petsmart did tell me that I did not need salt water.

All of the pet stores around here stink... one uses wood pellets for substrate (and not even that many, as you can always see the bottom of the tank) and the water dish (singular, not plural) is always empty. They are in an open cube with a heat lamp dangling above the top of the cube, so the humidity is usually at like 25%. The other pet store isn't as bad, but it could definitely be better (not deep enough substrate, no hidey huts, no salt water, etc.).

Why breed and buy when shelter animals die?

If you can't afford the vet, you can't afford the pet.

My Petco kind of stinks... I don't know what it is- their stuff seems to be about right, from what I can tell... I think they just keep too many crabs in the tanks. Sometimes I go there and see crabs doing surface molts, and I freak out and go get an employee, and they just kind of look at me like "What do you want me to do?" They're also under the impression that there is only one type of hermit crab...
The Petsmart is even worse, though. They keep them on this strange gravel and the entire tank is about a quarter inch full of water, which is also their drinking water, obviously. And they have knats living on them.

I'm thinking that my Petsmart uses gravel too.....Petco uses all moss. I always see water in the tanks at both stores, but no food....I think they feed the animals at night or something. The experiences people have at these chain stores seem to vary from city to city....probably depende on the management of the individual stores. It's strange that Petco would only seem to think there is one kind of hermit crab when they carry both PPs and Straws.....
