you bring home three new hermies because you miss the 5 (out of 6) that are currently buried.
I've been considering getting a couple large hermies and today I couldn't resist. I only meant to get two but the pet store had about ten larges to choose from and three of them just kept telling me to take them home. They've had their baths and are in ISO. They seem to be settling in well so far. One of the new hermies pinched me badly at the store. LOL. I'm only used to my 6 smalls and mediums and had never been pinched by any of them. This large (yet unnamed!) grabbed the flesh of my palm just under my first finger and would NOT let go! OUCH! Finally, the gal who was helping me let me run my hand under water to make him let go. She joked that I wouldn't be taking that one home... but of course, I did. He was just scared. LOL. I've got a sore spot about the size of a quarter from that bugger. I have no idea what to name these three- one female and two males. I'll post pictures when I have some decent daylight to get good pictures.

LOL! That's not bad... Right now I'm just calling them Small, Medium and Large as, although they are all "large" hermies, they are a range of sizes. I'm thinking that maybe I'll use the initials S, M and L for their names so I can remember which one is which at first! (They look quite a bit different too- the smallest is a bit pale, the largest is very dark brown and the medium one is somewhere in between.)

I fully understand. In my two tanks of 4, I have one in each tank that isn't burrowed somewhere.
Jay-Jay, form my bigger tank, just sits on the top of the net all day. And Robby, from my smalls tank, sleeps most of the day or sits in the crab hotel. I miss my little guy & gals ![]() I'm tempted to pick up 1 or 2 today, but I worry when hubby gets home and sees them he'll have me taken away.

Eeek, sorry you got pinched!
I think that's it's great that you still decided to take that one home... I think that most people (people who don't know about hermies, anyway) would probably have decided to either get smaller ones or get none at all! Anyhow... I'm really excited to see your pictures. I hope you post them soon!

I have one of those big guys with "the claw" and that one really freaks me out and I don't hold it very often. I call him Hercules because he/she is so strong. I can't tell yet whether it's a boy or girl crab. As far as I can tell, it looks like all of my small crabs are boys. I have looked at pics of what a femals should look like and I'm not sure if I'm not just missing something or if they are in fact all boys. Are male crabs more common than females?

And this is the crab currently known only as "S". This is the smallest and maybe the prettiest of the three new guys. Male. I haven't come up with a good name yet. Looking for something that suits his beautiful coloring and sweet personality. In the first picture he's pretending to be shy. I think he's a natural model and was so much fun to photograph.

Hm, I realized after I posted that I reduced the size of those photos quite a lot to get them to fit the allowable file size to upload. If you'd like to see the same 6 photos at a much larger, more detailed size you can go to my flickr site. The little photos don't do my new crabbies justice!
