I don't know of any Petco's in Ontario, but thought this was pretty impressive for a store to post ... question is do they follow through with it??

My local PetCo takes pretty good care of their crabs. The substrate is suitable if a bit shallow and they have temp and humidity gauges as well as hiding spots. Usually the humidity is on the low side, but not bad. It's too bad my other LPS, Pet Quarters isn't as good. They keep their hermies in the same cage as some desert lizards on a dry, woody substrate. I feel bad every time I go in there, but haven't mustered up the courage to complain other than the time that I mentioned to one of the underlings that they had a dead crab in the 'tat. They shrugged. (GRRRR.)

My petco is where I get my crabs from, They use what looks to be an EE sand mix with a bunch of hidys and climbers. They regularly mist the tank and you have to fill out some pet adoption form, so obviously they feel as if they are valued pets.

and... I knew I read that caresheet before... When I got to the heading "Removing the bad stuff" in the water section I had to investigate..

look familiar? While it's good and all that they provide the information...It would be nice if a multi million dollar company could hire a researcher or research themselves how to take care of a pet.... Or at least paraphrase.

the only petco i've ever been to is near my grandma's house in flordia. they took good care of all there pets but there where no one with any knowledge of hermit crabs.

It does say at the bottom of the article that their source is Hermit Crab Association...

To me it doesn't really matter ... I don't care where they got it, I'm just glad to see a store taking this kind of a step towards the treatment of hermit crabs. At least the information is accurate. You don't see that much with all the misinformation and outdated material out there...

Ah, I stopped reading when I saw something I read before, and the HCA isn't where the info was actually from. It was from hermit-crabs.com.

too bad they wont print it out and give it to every customer who buys a hermit crab. Not everyone uses the internet.

A couple of our crabs came from Petsmart and a couple from PetCo. I was a little more impressed whit the care and variety of hermit crab stuff available at PetCo. At Petsmart they had all of their crabs in about a 10....maybe 20 gallon tank. Looked like way too many for the tank. We asked the guy if they HAD to have salt water and he said "no". Then I read mixed info on the web...but when I got here...most of you experienced crabbers said "yes, definitely" .I figured if it won't harm them then why not go ahead. I have a glass dish that has a divider and I fill one side with fresh water and one side with salt water.
