But how would you know if a crab in a non-painted shell was forced into it? It's more obvious with the painted ones because we KNOW that the crab didn't find that painted shell laying on the beach in the tropics! I also have to wonder if ALL the crabs in painted shells have been treated so inhumanely. I'd like to think that maybe the painted shells are offered to crabs and the ones who do switch into a painted shell just get separated out and sold as "fancy shell" crabs. That may be naive of me, but I can hope... I think the most important thing we can do is keep getting the word out and NOT to buy crabs in painted shells. If crabs in painted shells don't sell, they certainly won't keep trying to sell them. My two cents.

What's *really* crazy is that they sell these shell painting kits at Petco. It comes with a nice, natural shell, and then you can put paint, glitter, basically anything you want to on there. You can even glue stuff on to the shell. Everytime I'm there, I take all the kits they have and put them in another department. I've been caught --- twice --- and been asked to please stop. So I asked them to please stop selling that product. They declined, so I declined to stop moving the merchandise. I have yet to be kicked out.

The Petco in the West Allis area is where I dropped off one the info packets so maybe they will stop doing that stuff. When I go home for Christmas, I'll be talking to all of them more in depth as well so hopefully I can get something accomplished.
