Deformd molts I think ive heard around here are due to the type of salt or amount of salt you use in the water.

Could be the "wrong" salt but it could be anything--are they E's? E's have alot more deformed molts than any other crab I have had

I use API brand aquarium salt an it only takes 1 teaspoon per gallon.....1 tablespoon sounds like a bit much for any salt to the amount of water you are using. What brand are you using? Were they dug up or interrupted during their molt? Was it a surface molt?

I use Instant Ocean and the directions call for 1/2 cup per gallon of water. You really should check the label of your friend's salt

Yes, the amount of salt varies from brand to brand. I guess it depends on how strong or concentrated the solution or salt rocks are. API comes in small rocks that dissolve in the water.

I'm assuming when you say that "they get everything a crab could hope for in captivity" you mean that you do not give them commercial food. One of the most common reasons for "bad molts" I've heard is the preservatives in commercial "crab" foods. Also, are your crabs getting enough calcium (which helps with the exoskeleton hardening)...I alternate giving them crushed cuttle bone, calcium powder, and crushed oyster shells mixed in with their food. If you do give commercial foods, I would recommend that you stop doing so and give only preservative free foods...they are some good threads on here about that. Good luck!!
