I'm going through my first 1...2...3 moults at the same time! At least I hope they're moulting and not dead. I thought one of my new pp's was moulting too turned out it had crawled inside my cholla wood and died!!! Now I'm starting to freak out about the others who have been down weeks (and weeks, and weeks..) and they're not big crabs. So, do I risk it and check or keep waiting and risk having some sort of disease/illness wipe out my 2 remaining crabbies?

Exactly how many weeks are we talking? Are they new crabs--how long have you had them? In my 20g tank, I haven't had ANY activity in about 2 months or more-and not all of them are buried, but they are not dead either! I mean they do not move at all-even at night. I don't know what is keeping them alive!

I have 2 that have been buried since christmas. I think they are ok, but I was wondering the same thing. I would like to check on mine too. Do they smell when they are buried? My tank smells fine! Maybe they come out at night from a tunnel and come up in a different spot from where you expect? Who knows, I would love it if they were not nocturnal.

2 of them were fairly new (2 weeks) and the other is one of the very first 2 I got 3 or 4 months ago. Time frame wise we're talking 6-7 weeks under and they're sm-med size.

I don't know if a buried dead crab would emit enough odor to penetrate the sand. Anyone else know for sure?

As for smelling while buried - I don't think so. Isn't that why we bury our dead? |

Not that this confirms nor denies, but I was wondering the same thing. Then yesterday after "going under" over 2 months ago - "Big Bubba" surfaced! I had to stop the stampede of children rushing the tank after one little voice cried out "LOOK! IT'S BIG BUBBA!" Big stinker just HAD to make his appearance during a math test didn't he?... How convenient!!

Well, I hate to say but I just discovered that Ant didn't make it through his 1st molt. I never smelled a thing. It had been way too long for such a tiny PP to be down, so I went looking for him and all I found was his empty shell at the bottom of tank under the sand. So, I would say, no you may not be able to smell when they've died.

You're sure he didn't swap shells and rebury when you weren't looking?
