I have no clue when to ISO my crabs. . .

And I'm not really sure how to.

What does an ISO look like?

And how long should they be there?

Generally, you should ISO your crabs when you first get them and when they are molting. And your ISO should be set up similar to your main tank... make sure to have the basics and some hiding places. And also, it needs to be kept in a dark place with minimal noise and general activity as to not disturb the crab.

A crab doesn't have to be moved into ISO for a molt. As long as all conditions are good and your substrate is deep enough, every thing should turn out fine. Most times you don't even know a crab is going to molt ... they just disappear one day, and it is not wise to unbury a buried crab.

How long did you have the crabs in your "tat"? If they were not new then ISO would not have been necessary..unless one was acting weird. An isolation tank is an extra tank set up with all your crabbies usual needs....where you can put new or sick crabs. If you ISO a sick crab, everything should be boiled when all is well or if the unthinkable happens.
I put my last surface molter in ISO because he was so exposed.
I'm sorry you lost some of your friends

! Anytime you lost several crabs, it helps to take inventory of your crabitat abd try to see if it was environmental. Maybe they just got sick or it was just their time.
