I know I must be driving everyone crazy at this point, but I have a question. We got a uth 8" by 8" 4 watt heater for our 10 gallon tank, but I can't see that it is working. I had about 3 inches of moist sand over it (heater is under the tank), so I thought I might have too much sand. I rearranged and now I have about 1 inch of sand over the heater. I can feel nothing! The glass is even cool. I should be able to feel heat from the heater shouldn't I? I called the pet store and the girl I talked to did not even know what I was talking about. They finally told me to bring it back in but not until after wednesday because they do not have anymore. Then they told me that not to worry about heat... hermit crabs do not need heat! lol I love pet stores. I wish I knew of a pet store that actually knew something about hermit crabs! So anyway... if anyone can give me some info on the uth and how warm they should feel to me... I would appreciate it.
Thanks

AFAIK, it will only raise the overall temp in your tank about 5-10 degrees. Do you have your tank raised up a bit for air circulation? Your tank is light enough, can you lift it up and feel the UTH? It should feel warm. If it feels warm, then its doing its job. Its more than anything warming the sand. Give it another couple days to fully work its magic.

I have the tank lifted with the spacers that came with the heater. So there is some space for air. I did lift the tank and still feel nothing. I had thinned out the sand over the heater and Crabby dug all of the way down to the glass and there is nothing. Thanks for the help though...I thought I should be able to feel heat!

So then, you lifted up the tank and felt the UTH itself? If its not warm to the touch, then its a dud.
