I live in South Florida about 5 miles from the beach
. What do you think about using beach sand for bedding instead of the sand you get at the store? and should it be cleaned in some way to make sure its safe for my little guys. Any feedback will be greatly appreciated.

Beach sand is wonderful. It's what they're used to living in the first place. Just make sure to bake it in the oven at 350 for 30-45 min. on a clean baking sheet. Stir it a few times while it's baking. This way, your sand will be free of sand fleas, or mites. Also collect the sand that's the driest near the waterline. Make sure it's from the area that the tide comes in.
I use EE, but I live 20 min. from the beach and the next time I change their substrate I'm gonna get some. I will probably mix it. I believe EE is easier to take care of. The crabbies poop naturally composts back into it. Hope I've helped. Have fun!!!

Beach sand is great and bake just as described first. I would make sure it is ok first to be taking the sand from the beach, you may want to find out in your area if it is illegal to take sand and stuff from the beach. I would hate to see anyone get a fine for taking sand from the beach home with them. A small amount would be fine but taking a large amount for your tank may be worth checking into.

I don't see a problem with taking a few buckets of sand home. No one's gonna give you problems. At least they don't here in california. But you never know about the beach sand police, they might sneak up on you.

There are laws in some states that you can not remove anything from the beach including sand. I don't understand why you have to poke fun at what I said when it is true. I was saying I didn't want anyone to get a fine if they were caught. It is up to the original poster on what she wants to do but to answer her question beach sand is fine.

I didn't mean to poke fun, I was making a funny. Didn't mean to offend you. Like I said they dont have a problem in california. I don't know about Florida, where Supernana is from. Youre right Chermo, she should check on it. But try not to take what I said personally. Just trying to lighten the topic up.
k?
