Default Substrate

I'm going to do a deep clean as soon as my currently molting hermit crab is up. I have play sand in there now, but I was wondering if anybody has a different preferred substrate. I was thinking of mixing eco earth and play sand.

I like the EE (eco earth) substrate the best cause it holds in humidity and the crab poo biodegrades in it... What does everyone else think?

I also use EE. My crabs love it as they have tunnels all over. In fact I just did a surface clean, taking all the crabs out and checking for lost empty shells (they got buried in the mounds) wrecking their tunnels in the process. As soon as I put them back and they investigated the changes, they went of their merry way making their tunnels.

I was having a problem with EE getting my water fall all clogged, so I put coral sand just around the water pools. That seemed to have helped a lot but now the EE has a mixture of coral sand in it. It works great as the hermies munch on the coral sand that is mixed in.

I always switch around- the EE works well with humidity- I like to use that in the winter when humidity is more of an issue

I was shopping around today and noticed EE was pretty darn expensive. Being a lowly teenager that also has to pay for her horse, I can't really afford it at $7 per little block.

I thought $7 was expensive! I was at Petland, I also looked at Bosley's but they don't carry it. I'm going tomorrow to check out Mr. Pets and this little one called Spuddy's that actually carries hermies XD. Hopefully I can find some that is resonably priced, plus some new tank crawly things!

no, $7 is expensive! Do you have a Petsmart nearby? It's a lot cheaper there! ($6 for 3 blocks)

I'm in B.C. Cananda, and as far as I know Petsmart is a mostly American chain. I don't think there are any in the Vancouver area, and I'm reluctant to drive a few hours when there are stores with hermit crabs and all the essentials in my area.

If it is the same size brick as in the US, it does expand to a lot of coconut fiber.
Do they sell any other brand of bricks?
