Hi, I'm New Here!
|
So yesterday I determined that Wayne (of Wayne and Garth - my two crabs) is a female. Guess she's a "Waynette". Anyway... I'd love to check Garth but he/she is very very shy and just won't come out of his shell unless he's in the tank. Does anyone have any suggestions for how I can get Garth to be a little more outgoing and comfortable with me? Wayne is fantastic and lets me hold her and loves to crawl around my desk. Garth, if he's not on the sand, he's up in his shell.

I still have a few crabs that have yet to be sexed. I really don't care though.....since they don't breed, it really doesn't matter if they are male or female....that is to me. I'm sure some people like to know so they can name them accordingly. Someone else suggested putting the shy crab in a glass dish and peer at it's underside by looking at the underside of the bowl.

Tinkerbell - get a small dish and put some smelly food in it. A small dab is all your need.
She will come out. My 'kids' love sardines. I chop and freeze in small dollops what I don't use. Popcorn is another hit. It must be butter & salt free. |

Thanks so much for the suggestions. My problem is keeping him/her out long enough to check the sex. Soon as I get near, he hopes back into his shell. That said however, as of the last 3 or 4 days the shy crab has pretty much been living "underground". I pulled it out today to be sure it was alive but it is completely buried under about 4" of sand/soil.

Leave him be. He/she just doesn't want to play show & tell. You will have to wait until he/she is comfortable with you. Of course that may not happen. My Ginny was very outgoing until her molt. Now she hides as soon as she sees a shadow.

Turns out Garth was molting. Being that these are my first two crabbies, I had no idea. Now I know... if they are hiding, there's a reason! Thanks guys!
