Default Seasponges?

I noticed in the bath product section at my local retail store they sell sea sponges in packages. Do you think these are safe?

Actually I have used these in the past but I boiled in salt water first.........as long as it states its a natural sponge and you boil it- I did not have any adverse affects

I bought a natural sea sponge at a craft supply store, and it had an odor even after microwaving it wet. This may be the natural odor of sea sponges, I have no idea. What is your experience?

Thanks,
Donna M.

If the smell is bothering you, you can try boiling in saltwater. Or you could first boil it in vinegar mixed with salt water and then boil it a few times more in salt water. That should take away any odor the shell has.

Thanks, but the more I use it, the more the odor lessens, so that's good. It wasn't too bad to begin with, but I was just wondering if it was normal. I also wanted to make sure it wasn't harmful to the crabbies.

Thanks,

Donna M.

Wouldn't vinegar make it smell more? (Lol) Or is it just me? I don't think that vinegar is good for your hermies either. (I could be wrong though)

Vinegar is a natural organic cleaner/sanitizer. It is probably one of the safest things to use as a cleaning agent for your crabby stuff.

Vinegar rinses out well. Heck, I use it in my humidifiers to clean the units. And when your containers get the salt residue on the bottom, just put vinegar in it and allow it to soak for a while (over night does the best job). Of course that works if you have a second container to use in the crabitat or you are doing a deep clean.

I feel really stupid now. (Hehe) I just thought it would be bad for the hermies.

Bleach would not be a good thing because it's a chemical. Vinegar is what they used to use to clean homes before all the commercial chemicals were available. It works great for removing mineral deposits and coffee/tea stains as well. I use it to clean the little catch tray under my automatic water disoenser in the door of the fridge. Pour a little in the tray and let it soak for about 10 min. and all the mineral deposits come right off. If you get a a used tank with mineral deposits, vinegar will remove those too.
