I check the shell for any sharp edges or holes, then I rinse it in salt water before putting it back.
I noticed when I do the periodic shell boil (in salt water) they seem to check out the shells more seriously.

I do have two E's that are in painted shells and they have not even checked out the new shell pile. Time to boil and add a few new ones.
