Well, I hate to say but I just discovered that Ant didn't make it through his 1st molt. I never smelled a thing. It had been way too long for such a tiny PP to be down, so I went looking for him and all I found was his empty shell at the bottom of tank under the sand. So, I would say, no you may not be able to smell when they've died.
