I'm not sure where it is, but there's a forum for posting adopters and adoptees so they can get together. At this time of year it's not a good idea to ship hermies because of the cold weather but if you can find someone in driving distance you might find a hermie that needs a loving home.

Another idea is to check Freecycle or Craig's List... I always find hermies on there in Kritter Keepers with either rocks or marbles as substrate, being fed Tetra hermit crab pellets and being given tap water... that's how I've ended up with sooooo many crabs, LOL... I actually never buy crabs from the pet store, haven't in a long time... I figure that the more I save, the more the store will end up putting in their places. :( So now, I strictly adopt. ;)

I don't know this to be true with all Tetra hermit crab food, but I do know that some of it contains a chemical that is poisionous to hermies, so I would definitely recommend not using any Tetra-made food.

Yes, Chuck is correct ... commercial foods are not very healthy for crabs as there are many ingrediants that do not have to be listed on the packaging ... like the bad stuff! Also, there is something in the commercial foods that is meant to lure the crab to the food. Try going to fresh (or dried!) fruits and veggies, meats, fish, shrimp, etc. This is a website where you can find the "good" foods and the "bad" foods and also contains receipies!
