Hey everyone! My little PP Burt had his first successful molt in my care.
:):):)He is SO much more active, and I have been watching him each day to see how much of his exo he has eaten. So far he only has left a leg and part of his BP. If anyone can give me tips on how to help him florish after this stressful time that would be great!
(ex what kinds of things should i feed him, should i have more humitity/less humidity/same in the tank etc)
Oh nd btw it was above ground so if there is anything that i need to
    do concerning that-

    Additional Details:
    I have a 20 gal tank
temp between 75 and 80 degrees
i spray tank with warm water for humidity
His diet consists of hermit crab food,
fish food flakes, and any fruits and vegetables i have
that are hermit crab safe! (i usually give him different fruits/veggies
each day but he always has the food and flakes available)
    Thanks again!
    Animallover and Burt <3

I'd say stop with the hermit crab food - there are preservatives and insecticides in there that can kill him. Offer him shrimp, either fresh or dried - dried ones are available in jars that will last at least a year at the pet store in the fish food aisle. Look for dried shrimp, plankton, krill, and any sorts of bugs available. What are the ingredients in the fish flakes? If there are any chemicals in those, they aren't safe either. Check out the addiction store for tons of crab-safe foods that are all great ofr your crabs. :)

Cool! I'm happy for you and Burt! I'd suggest purchasing a calcium block for your hermie. Calcium helps hermies after molting.

    Thanks guys!
I'm cutting off the crab food. I made sure
the fish flakes were safe and they are. Btw,
I have a pet bird and I buy her the
cuttlebone. Is bird cuttlebone safe for
my crab? I think it's the same but just making sure.

It is. Cuttlebone is actually suggested by hermie-owners, as it is a good source of calcium. So are clean, washed eggshells, and crushed oyster shell.:D I hope you and Burt are good to go!!!

What type of substrate do you have? If you have gravel or something then that's probably why he surface molted. Also, maybe you should get him a friend.;):D He might like that.:D

I use playsand, and it's sand castle consistency
so I am confused as to why he surface molted.
I guess he saw no threat as to I have no other crabs?
I'm just happy he's alright now because
I was away for the weekend when he molted so I came home
To a bunch of legs on the substrate and I thought he was dead:eek:
But then I realized he molted, now he's good
    so I'm sooo relived.

Oh an btw as I'm writing this he's sitting
on a seasponge looking at me with those
Oh So Adorable little eyes. lol!!:D

Some crabs prefer to surface molt. There's another moderator at HCP who has had over 500 successful molts in her 11 years of crabbing and all but two of them have been surface molts. Who knows why.

Him to the new guy and vice versa.

an I feel just terrible:( please don't get mad at me:eek: )

First you have to ISO him for a month. Keep him in a seperate tank or you might be able to put a divider in your tank if you only have one. Give him a mite bath and then you can just put him in with the other crab.

actually, i'd sugest you get a smaller or slightly bigger crab(S), so thier less likely to have shell fights. And get 2 or three more, so they dont get lonley if one is down moulting or something, well, thats just my opinion.

Hello, Animallover. . . Does Burt have a hermie friend??? Hermit crabs are very social creatures and hate being alone. . .
