alright, its my understanding that all of the armies in warhammer 40k, when played right, can beat any other army, and that no army is significantly over-powerd.

Am I right or wrong on this?

I am looking at either space marines or necron. My reasoning here is that its fewer models to paint that are more powerful unit for unit, unlike mass large armies like Imperial Gaurd or Tau

True, although some armies have a rough fight in certain match-ups.

Example - Orcs vs. Deamons. You just can't beat an army of 300+ models with 30 or so. You get swarmed!

eh, if you kill all 3000 you get all the points though right? Even if you lose all 30 of your models and its still considered a win

Not on my game table! If one army gets wiped out, it loses.
