An acquaintance of mine online from Alaska has been very fortunate to have her crabs mate 2 years straight.
With permission I've decided I'd post the stuff for everyone to see :]
The link to her account is: http://godzillahermitcrab.deviantart.com/ and her youtube is http://www.youtube.com/user/farfinmosker

She has posted 3 videos if her hermit crab Big Mamma from last year.

These are the video of them mating: http://youtu.be/ocT8po6g8jY & http://youtu.be/gWdZ1IfayZU

This is the video of the eggs: http://youtu.be/Xar-HD2nlBY
    These are the starting eggs.

They later start to fade to the clearer orange and as they become closer to being due they turn grey.

After going on a trip out of state her crabs deposited the eggs in the saltwater dish and actually grew a bit. Unfortunately, she didn't have the money for the baby tank setup so her husband had to flush them while she was gone.

When she came back from her trip she started a fund to make the new baby tank which would cost $500 to have all the necessary things for the eggs to grow and such. She has the tank and now this year she has 2 crabs who have successfully mated.

    This Year

Big Mamma has mated again this year and with all the crabs she has the father is unknown:

The little white glob is suspected to be semen which is attached to the gill grooming claw.

This is her crab Cat's eggs this year. She is a first timer and her partner is Gangsta.

Unfortunately she is going out of town in August so she thinks she will be unsuccessful but she is going to put them in the saltwater birthing tank.

    Re: HermitCrabs Mating in Captivity

I think thta's what my trouble I was having, cause all the sudden I had crabs attacking one crab, but it wasn't really attacking, there was no loud chirping, but they would not leave the crab alone at all! I ended up taking the crab out and putting it in iso for over a month, I am now tring to intro it back. I checked to see what the crabs were, I didn't see any spots on the others if that means they are boys and they other one I couldn't get it to come out at all to see. tonight crabby paddy sat on the crab for 10 min then moved on and now another crab is setting on it but is not giving up and leaving it alone, just setting on it

    Re: HermitCrabs Mating in Captivity

Maybe so scoobdoo! I hope your crab does alright now that it's back with the others. My crabs chill on each others backs and sometimes sleep that way while the other walks around (mine are all male though). It'd be cool if yours were really mating but it's expensive to be successful

    Re: [Updated!] Mating in Captivity

I had to take the crab out after a little while still wouldn't leave it alone..so I waited likea week and a half and stuck him back in, this is after the crab has been in iso for almost over a month and half now all the sudden everyone is fine!? no one is bother anyone! so next yr I will know if the crabs pick on this one crab again, it is a mating thing! I don't thing they had a chance to get it on so to speak, cause as soon as i saw them picking on the crab I took it out and left it out

    Re: [Updated!] Mating in Captivity

lol scoob, I'd have stopped mine too. Sooo many babies come from the result and it is too expensive to care for them. Hopefully it was just mating though and they don't actually have a problem with that crab. I must admit, I am fortunate that mine are all buddies.

I didnt think baby hermit crabs survived in captivity. Something about not being able to copy the ocean tides and the moon phase.

They're doing pretty well so far, her crab Cat's babies are 2 weeks old now with more than 100 still alive and have gone through 1 molt

Yes I have seen the videos but no hermit crab that was hatched in captivity has survived.

    Re: [Updated!] Mating in Captivity

Well, she is trying her best anyways, guess we'll see how it turns out.
She's been reading research and stuff about it.
Never hurts to try it out and it's pretty educational

    Re: [Updated!] Mating in Captivity

I for one don't want any unwanted baby crabs to deal with, i will take every precaution to make sure no hanky panky goes on in my tank!

    Re: [Updated!] Mating in Captivity

It would be nice if they could be born in and raised in captivity. Maybe then they could stop taking them out of the wild and increase the chances of survival.

    Stage 3:

    Stage 4:

"In this pic, is stage 4. I have the arrows pointing out the differences between 3 and 4. The top two arrows are pointing to the two longer tail spines. The bottom arrow is pointing out the larger join on the second tail lobe."

    Stage 5:

"In this pic, is stage 5, the last larval stage before glocothoe. You can tell stage 5 by the presence of blunt spines (not sure what they're called) underneath the tail. The arrows are pointing to them."

I quoted her because she explains better than I can summarize :chuckle:

Glocothoe/Glocauthoe: a young hermit crab that has completed the swimming larval stages.
