I'm currently upgrading all my hermie stuff. I found myself pretty dissapointed in the UTH I had, it did nothing! So this time around I'm trying light bulbs. I bought an infra-red blub so it can stay on at night as well and I was wondering, do I have to buy a proper tank lighting unit for it, or can I simply put it in any old lap type thing?

You want to concentrate the heat down to the tank. Does your lab light have a reflector?
If yes, and you can set it up safely (without it falling) then give it a try.
