I went to Petsmart last night, and against my better judgement, looked at the hermies, wish I didn't now!
They were sitting in two large aquariums, screen lids, completley dry and looks like they have wood chips or mulch for substrate. The employess were all hanging out, chatting and playing with a lizard. Finally one came over and asked if they could help me. I siad yes, could you please give those crabs some water and mist their tank? He said, they don;t need water or misting!! I went on to explain about thier gill function and how they needed to be in a warm and humid environment, to which he replied I must not know what I am talking about because Petsmart has NEVER, EVER had a hermit crab die!!!!!!!
I am calling the store manager today, she does not get into the store till late afternoon is what I was told.
Maybe it would be better if hermit crabs were not sold anywhere, too many are being killed or made to suffer ??

I left several messages yesterday, supposed to call me back, nothing yet.
I know one of the dog trainers that works there so am going to call her there tomorrow, just hate to get her invovled since she really needs this job. I am hoping she can at least check the crabs daily and keep them misted if nothing else.

Our Petsmart was great...crabs in good condition, care sheets, water, sponges etc. they get a shipment in on Friday mornings and by Sunday afternoon they only hvae like 5 crabs left if any. we always ahve to wait till Friday to get a crab...we buy in small amounts...like one..or two then wait. Now we just buy LOL but they have been great. they also have woman at night as they refer to her as the hermit crab resident specialist. any questions or situations they said to call ask if she is working and bring the crab over. So i guess we are lucky about our store.

[IMG] petco is where ive been buying all my lil crabbies , all of them except the baby one has had something wrong with them , except the aquarium is wonderful for them , they always have the proper water fresh and salt , all supplies on hand to purshase, and when i baught my last two they gave me care sheets for them , explaining diet , proper care , molting , ect. however after loosing my lil guy monday i came to realize that they are just throwing the crabbies in there to sell , and not giving a care to cheak them to see there shape, they have no ISO area , or explaination of importantance of ISO .they do make a big deal about making sure that the people who buy them are going to take care of them. they also do not mist . maybe next time i go there i will suggest this site , and show them the ones i always see that are not in shape to be in with others ect. also they have no sand , it is all wet bark like substrate . so it is some good , some bad. i WILL be more volcal next time i visit maybe suggestion to them to hire someone to care for the craabs as they do the other animals .
