I type painted shells on google and found this site that says that there painted shells are safe since they put this non-chip coat on it. Is that true? i'm not going to buy but i'm curious.

Painted shells are not safe in any shape or form.

Yup, It may say taht but most of us all have seen the painted shells that hermies come in and they still chip. And who knows maybe the "anti-chip coat" whatever they put on it is poisonous too?

Hermit crabs have also been known to get stuck in the painted shells from the paint.

Just because it's not harmful to us, doesn't mean that it's safe for the crabs.

    Painted shells are bad news.

Unfortunately, even strong coats don't do well with the substrate, especially sand, which is just the right texture to slowly scrape away at the coating until holes appear, and it WILL happen, over time. And When even the smallest hole appears, it's all downhill from there! :/

I wish there was a non toxic porous paint, to be honest. I'd like to be creative.... without them in the shells, of course.

I prefer the more "natural" look anyway.
