Alright, we got our first hermit crab yesterday and of course, I know nothing about them . Can someone tell me what kind this little guy is? That would be a great start.

    Thanks for the help

It's called " I jsut got new crabs what do I do now?" the checklist, in the portal, is also helpful. Read the other stickies too. They all help.
Good luck and we'll be here if have any questions.

Welcome. Yup, you definitely got an E. All of my E's climb the ceiling of the tank, also! What's his name? Is it a he or a she?

Actually no, I think you're wrong. Aussie hermit crabs don't have 2 stripes on the side on their body, and Ecuadorians do. And, the hermit crab he has has 2 stripes on the side of its body. Also, Aussie hermit crabs have black vertical stripes goin up their pinchers
and the one he has doesnt

WOW you can even tell if it's male or female? We called him Hermie... I have so much to learn.

From what I saw so far, the ''E'' seems to be the most common one, am I right? It is not very big and I am kind of afraid to pick him up .

I will read the stickys and try my best. I am going to set up a 15 gallon tank this weekend for him with some cool things. Oh, and some friends too.

I am glad I found this place, thanks all.

Actually, in the US, Purple Pinchers are the most common. Second most common is Ecuadorians. Then I think third most common are Ruggies and Straws, but I don't know.

Yeah, you can find out what gender they are. Heres a link to how: http://www.hermitcrabsrus.com/forum...out-care/3137-gonopores-male-female-crab.html

Good luck on making the tank. Be sure to make the substrate deep and hav the humidity at 70-80%

THere is a species ID on the crabroom.com. I agree, PPs and Es are the most common and finding an Aussie might be difficult, even if you tryed reazlly hard. I can't even find an E!

Yep, I have been reading here all week ;) and I already have the thermometer, humidity gauge, coconut shell hut, some extra shells of different sizes. I just need to get more sand and some toys and I think we will be alright.

I would like to find a large hc, the one we have is small...

    Thanks for the excellent info.

I would like to ask if they can change color sometimes, he seems different than earlier this week. Hard to tell on the pictures though.

Yes, hermit crabs do tend to become lighter or darker pre-molt, so he may be molting soon. Be sure to have deep enough sand for him to bury in, at 'least' twice his height. Also, great pictures.

Try a smaller pet store. Petco etc mostly carry PPs.
