Hey everyone. I was at petco earlier to get some stuff for my hermies and I came across this : http://www.petco.com/product/105089...allAnimalSupplies_ShopAll_SleepersandHideouts

I bought it since it was nice and big; the straw would be good for climbing and it would be a good hideaway for them. My mediumish female pp loves it; she was hanging upside down in it since it has bars inside. I was wondering; would this be harmful to them? It's only made of wood straw and jute. The wood isn't pine; I smelled it to make sure. I just have to see how durable it is once I get the crabbies new tat set up.

Pine is bad for animals in general. The phenol oils cause all sorts of issues. Most wood toys are made from birch.

I don't think I'd trust it, personally. The product page just says "all natural wood" but not what kind of wood. Most toys made for hamsters, etc. like that one have pine or cedar in them as that's the popular type of bedding people use for them. I don't think I'd trust it even if it doesn't smell "piney" as sometimes you can't smell it until it's being burned or has been broken open due to all of the stuff they cover the outside with. Also, hamster environments aren't damp, so putting it in a crabitat with all the humidity will probably not work so well - could rot out the wood or leach out any chemicals used to make it.
