OK so my crabs had burried himself for a week or so, yesterday he came back to the surface i thought he might have molted but later he went back down and is still down there. Did he molt? or is he molting now? what is going on.

Hermit crabs can dig down for a day and come back up and come back down pre-molt. It means he's finding the perfect molt spot. But if you just got him he could be destressing.:D

Oh yeah be sure to double-check your humidity/temp.

And your substrate if it's not coconut fiber or sand (at sand castle consistency) he might not be able to mold and the san might have been brushed away forcing him to find a new spot.

the sand is wet enough to dig, i think it might be because i got a new heating mat for the tank and he wanted to move away from it, and no he is not new

It's probably nothing to worry about. Check the humidity and temperature just in case. It could be a pre-molt. Other molting symptoms are cloudy eyes, excessive eating and drinking (that would be before he started digging), lack of activity, and light-colored abdomen. It could also be destressing or for fun. Sometimes my hermies dig after I play with them too much. Or maybe if you recently moved him into a new tank?

Hermies do what they want to do when they want to do it. They will dig tunnels just for fun. They will hide until you have left the room. In one hole and out the other way across the tank.
I have also noticed that they will hide when the weather is changing... like when a storm is about to hit... they are down. Once the barometric pressure starts to rise, they will be back up.

Haha, mine ALWAYS do that to me! I left my crabs at my mom's house all last semester, and when I got home in May, ALL of my crabs were down molting! I was like... "What the heck!" It took them until about two weeks ago for them to all finally come back up. So lame.
