The absolute best place to get crabs, as so many people will tell you, is the Crabbage Patch. However, it's now the time of the year where any reputable vendor will not ship a live crab due to the weather. However, I would suggest you visit Tammy's site to get more info on her operation.

Just looked at OddyCrab's list. I first started with Crab Island. The owner, Ruth Ann, is very helpful. BUT she shipped me two separate orders of crabs in JANUARY (she's in Mass) and SECOND DAY DELIVERY!!

Her business mainly is going to craft fairs in the New England area, and all her crabs have painted shells. She will even sell you a crab in your choice of shell. Wonder how she does that? So I asked her via email. Gee whiz, she didn't answer me!

I don't think they can take a crab out of its shell. A crab would rather be pulled apart then give up its shell!

I've also heard nasty rumors of them getting the crabs out of their shells and putting them in the painted shells. Horrible things ... I don't even want to think about it if it's true!

There was a discussion on another crab forum few years ago about this. Someone posted a video on how it was done. They chill the crabs, until the crabs can't really move anymore and take them out of the shell. They then put them in a painted shell.
    Very cruel.

There's probably not a lot of animal rights in the country where they do this.

Do you know where that video is? I would love to take it to places that have crabs in painted shells and show them what they are doing when they buy crabs in shells like that! I never knew it was done like that, that makes me sick!

    Allie's mommy -
OF COURSE they take the crabs out of their shells. There are several methods, like gassing them. Another one is to freeze them enough to make them unconcious but not enough to kill them. Which is why about half of them die prior to going into painted, and even natural shells.

This is just so disgusting I always thought they just put them in an ISO tank and waited till they tried out the painted shell, then took the other one away. I am so naive.
