Alex - how many crabs are you looking to obtain? Because your 30g won't have room for much more, based off of how my 2 mediums are with my 6 tinies in my 30g. If you don't have a lot of upper levels, I don't think I'd get any more crabs until you take advantage of more of the room in the tank for them.

no problem, Alex! I think you can get more crabs, you're certainly capable, but i do think you should add levels and such as Emma suggested. Just to make it more comfortable and more like a hermie paradise =]

hmmm... i thinkcyou can get them pretty much anywhere. I'm not sure, so you may want to ask, but i think for a small level at least a plastic soap-bar holder for bathrooms with suction cups would work. Check Vicki's store, i think she has something, and also check e-bay, and youtube (for ideas, i'll send you a link to the coolest guy on there! you have to see his tank!) and you could ask him, too! :D

here is the hermie guy's main youtube page:
    YouTube - ErmitanoVideo's Channel
Here's some awesome vids that might give you ideas for second levels and your tank:
YouTube - ErmitanoVideo's Channel (this one is great... this guy goes through all his crabitiat items, including his second level!)
YouTube - ErmitanoVideo's Channel (part 2 of the video above =])

oh and for the heck of it... i'll trow my two favroite videos of his in here! they made me giggle =3

oh dear >=/ well from the video, the second level consists of a piece of glass/plexiglass, held up by choya wood. He also uses jungle vine things for them to climb up :)

Can you ask your parents to allow you to watch some specific videos on a different computer?

(I'm biting my tongue on internet censoring right now.)

If not, I think it's beyond silly, and I will be happy to take some screen captures for you and post them here for you to see. Nothing like blocking educational information instead of just some careful monitoring!

Also, due to some recent stuff, I assume you are spending some time working out your hermit crab tank. Will you post pictures for us once you have a chance to?

Glass? Do you have to put substrate on the second level, because it could just fall off.

yeah, what people usually do for second levels it seems is they put a substrate (this is where people use the special moss a lot) and a hidie or a shell shop, usually. i don't know exactly what is was made of... but probably plexiglass.

Plexiglass. Probably cheaper to use the shower caddy way though, instead.

The stuff that you stick on to the shower wall to hold your soaps and other shower stuff?

you can get one of those, stick it to the side, and put some moss in there, and set up something for them to climb up there with.

yup, just make sure it's on the "safe" list, because certain mosses like frog moss aren't safe =]

Your parents are really going to drive you 8 hours or more from Maine - NJ to adopt a hermit crab???
I personally think you need to get your tank fixed so your crabs stop dying first then set up a good ISO so your ready to adopt more AFTER you are sure no more of your crabs are going to die.

oh, i lied; frog moss is one of the good ones >.< that's what you get for trying to remember everything...! Here you go, if you would like to look at the thread, type in "moss" and look for the sticky on it =]

:( "Not suitable for hermit crabs :(

Spanish Moss can harbor bugs and is treated
with pesticides. It is not a true moss but an air plant
that absorbs calcium and moisture from the air.

Cypress is a conifer with wood/needles that are
    toxic to crabs when ingested.
Depending on the species of cypress,
some have toxic properties, among them arsenic.

Beaked Moss provides a Realistic Setting for Reptiles and Amphibians
Completely Natural (no dyes or chemicals)
But, it is harvested from coniferous rain forests of
Oregon which is toxic to hermit crabs.

:) Ok to use for hermies :)
    Hiawatha Moss
Sphagnum moss (NOT sphagnum PEAT moss)
    Naturals Floral Moss from Walmart
    Frog Moss"

I know you can get Frog moss at Petco (i would have got it but i thought it was the bad moss, lol!)

Cloie - I ended up keeping most of my adoptees, and adopted some out locally, so adopting from me if out of the question now anyway.

I do agree though, that given the number of deaths in your tank you need to work on tank conditions before looking for new hermies to house.

Everything you have in your main tank you need in your ISO, it does not have to be as "pretty" but it needs all the essentials.

ISO tanks are usually just replicas of your main tank (perhaps a little smaller depending on your tank size) and is only used for sick, new, or molting hermies to recover. ISOs are kept pretty much at perfect conditions for optimal healing/recovering/less shock/ etc. =]
