I posted an ad on my local CL about being able to adopt hermies that needed home about 2 weeks or so ago and got a hit last night :)

I am meeting a woman in a couple hours to take 2 hermies and their tank. I have to be honest I don't know what conditions they are in, but I have hope for them, I am picking up a 20 gallon tank for free tomorrow and am going to use my 10 gallon for iso and I am in the works for a Huge tank soon :)

Super excited and I will post pics later

Well. I picked them up. Unfortunately one was dead already :-( It must have been dead awhile because when I picked it up, all it's limbs fell off.

The other one is lively and happy and although he is in a painted shell I don't suspect that will take long to fix. He wasn't in as bad a shape as I thought he might be, I was given an 8 gallon (approx) glass tank, a mesh wire lid, climbies and wood. They didn't have anywhere to hide and only one water dish, but easily fixable. (In fact I already bought a half long and an extra cocohut.

I know I should leave it be for a little while, but I can't help but think I should change the sand since I have no idea how long the other was dead in there. Ideas??

Well since the new crab is not molting, i think it should be safe to change the sand. I feel bad for that poor, dead hermie. I don't know if the sand can hard the crab, but if it's really dirty, you probably should change it.

I did end up changing it, and he changed shells as soon as I put new ones in the cage (So I got to watch him change too - how cool) Here are a couple pics of him. I don't know if he is a PP or an Indigo. He is a dull purple/blue color, but the end of two of his legs is bright red. (Oh yea, and his crabitat redone :) )

I feel terrible for the dead one too. It was half buried under bad sand and everything around it was rock hard. It was so dehydrated and didn't smell at all, so it must have been there for sooooo long... We still can't come up with a name for the new guy

Poor guy. I know you just bought that log and stuff but it's probably not safe. If it's pine or cedar, it's def not and if it's any other wood, I'm not sure. Also, the log I would take out. Especially if you found it outside it might have bugs etc.

I figured he is, but I wasn't sure because none of my others are those shades.

Sorry about the misspeak, I am still new to all the different types.

My husband says we should name is Gari (Prononuced Garr-e not Gary) because it is Pickled Ginger (We have sushi, wasabi, and now pickled ginger lol)

I think "Pickle" or "Vinegar" is a good name for a hermit crab!!!

It is oak, I cut it off my tree in the back yard, soaked it really good in (man made, not ocean) salt water, let it dry out, and then microwaved it. I had done a few for my other crab tank, so I had 4 or 5 of them.
