I have an idea that could save your crab(s) life. Ok my idea is:I have heard of crabs dying of mites or other crabs. So put your crab in a mite and crab free. I'm going to try it when my crab is going to molt. I thought it might help to tell you. if you like this idea please post! my hermy is:victoria
sorry I did not say the right thing I ment to say. put your crab in a mite and crab free tank. like I said sorry
Hi Victoria, I have 3 crabs and have never removed them from the main tank for molting purposes. My one little E has molted once and my two PP's have molted 3 times each. If all your conditions are right, there shouldn't be too much of a problem... Your tank shouldn't have mites...if it does, you need to get rid of them.
I only ISO molters in extreme life or death situations. I have found the uneventful molts happen at the bottom of the main tank!!
While your idea is fine, unless you have a mite infestation it is unlikely that a moulter would have mites. Also, although some people do ISO moulters, it usually is difficult to catch them right as they are ready to go down. I have enough substrate (6 times my largest crab) for them to moult very comfortably in their tank.
