Lately I have been wanting to get a different species other than the PP's I already have. I was looking on a website and it was going really in depth over Indos, a species I was not very familiar with. It was saying that they do look kind of like PP's, but giving a few subtle differences. I started thinking about it and my large, Goliath, has some of those differences! I just always thought it was because he's old...
Examples of what I'm talking about:
HUGE BP... figured it had to do with the age.
Bright red around the eyes and then red on the antenea...
Got him from Petco. Not sure if I'm just getting over excited or not...
    I really can't tell. :p

Okay, I took a pic and am waiting for it to show up in my email... Had to use my camera phone and email it to myself.
That was hard. All I really managed to do was get sand all over my bed and a couple blurry pics. Oh, and Jack, Goliath's follower crab, got mad and chirped.
Here's one taken about a week ago:

And here's a close up I just tried to take that's kind of blurry... I was trying to get the eye stalks.

Yea... I always thought he was a PP, but I was talking to another hermit crab person on some other website last night and they were saying something about him possibly being an Indo because of the red on his eyeballs and how long they are.
But that's okay... I like him whatever he is! :D
And I love his dark colour also.. very pretty.

That would not have been an Indo anyway it would have been a Viola. They dont have red eyeballs - :)

Yea... later on in the evening, the same person started telling me that my hermies NEED potting soil and can't survive without it. Heh... that's when I clued in on the fact that maybe they really aren't a crabbing expert.

Yeah, I thought one of my hermit crabs that looked like that was a straw but it was a PP too.

Yea, I think it was more of me wanting to have an "exotic," because I've been keeping crabs for several years now. So I should have probably known... I was just hoping he was. :p
And yea... I have a few freshly molted crabs that are BRIGHT red, PP's tend to do that.

    What a beautiful crab! :D
Indo's BPs are lavender. His is a very dark shade of purple, so he is a PP.
I want an exotic, too, but I'm not ready for one yet.

How can they survive in potting soil if they live near the ocean on beaches. How did you find this person
