I'm not sure if cheerios are safe. The only safe cereals I know of are Rice Crispies and Crispy Rice. If the cheerios and lucky charms contain sugar and, you need to immediately discontinue from feeding your hermit crabs them. Table salt contains iodine, which is very bad for hermit crabs, and sugar is also very unhealthy. For more information, please go to the Safe Food List and I just bought hermit crabs what do I do now? (they are stickies)
Welcome to the website, by the way! :)

I would totally not risk giving crabs lucky charms.
    Especially the marshies in 'em.

Feeding your crabs cereal is like giving a child a candy bar with dinner and expecting him to eat the healthy stuff. Crabs DO like sweets, but they arent good for them, because then they will be too full to eat the stuff they SHOULD be eating.
Like Hermez says once in a blue moon if your holding your crab ad want to try hand feeding cereal is a good start, but not as an everyday staple.

So you SHOULDN'T give hermit crabs cheerios? Even if they're plain, and not like the sweet ones? I give them to my hermies every so often, and they seem to LOVE them. They drag them around and in the morning I have a bunch of half-eaten cheerios. I'll definitely stop if it's not good for them though!

nope plain cheerios are OK for once in a great while treat, the yellow box is good, the purple box (Multi grain) is better. Less sugar.
I use cheerios to make them try new foods, I stuff the middle with it LOL

"Lucky Charms" is a very sugary cereal. . . Sugar is not safe for hermie-health. . . Of course, the natural sugars in fruit are, though!!!

I did an article over at the Epicurean Hermit site discussing the role of starches in crab diets. Keep in mind, I'm not a crustacean biologist, and I haven't done any official experiments. My theory is just that, a theory, but it is based on observations of my crabs' behavior around natural carbohydrates. I'd love some discussion here about it, as it does have to do with why we should or should not feed cereals and such.
