I went to Petco to get some stuff for my tarantula and was planning on buying a particular straw I had first seen in October, if it was still there. The straw in question lacked the bright red color straws normally have and even had strange white markings on its BP like a juvenile straw even though it was a large, so I had no difficulty telling which straw it was. It had probably been passed up because of its poor coloring. :tear: Luckily it was still there, so I picked it up (turns out its a 'she') and two friends for it.

    Large female straw:

    Buddy #1 Large male:

    Buddy #2 Medium shy crab:

I also picked up 2 PPs while there. I was actually looking for a black ruggie, but these little guys stole my heart:
    Teeny PPs in bath:

Both PPs were too shy to sex.

    Drying off after the bath:

    The straws in ISO:

Yeah, Jeff the reptile manager said they haven't been selling very good at all. :tear: The one straw has been there since October when I got cityzoo her straws. The others must have come from a later shipment. I'm pretty sure its the same straw because of the white on the claw. I would look for it and see it in the tank almost every time I went there if it was out. Or is white and orange a common marking with straws?

WOW! Your three straws look so pretty! I think the one that you think is lighter than she should be, has most likely molted in captivity & lost some of her original coloring. She will probably gain it back, after she gets the proper nutrients, probably in a couple molts.

I waited a year until I got up enough nerve to get some straws, too. I was so afraid of them & how fragile they are. They are prone to die from PPS, as I have lost 4 out of a total of 10. In 3 of the 4 cases, they passed within the first week, so that would definately be PPS related. The other one dug done three weeks after I purchased him & must have died shortly after. I don't regret waiting longer to buy them, and other than the PPS, they seem to be happier & healthier than I expected.

I LOVE my straws & I am sure you will too! They brighten up the tank & can be real characters once they adjust to their surroundings! Again....CONGRATS!!!

I'm pretty sure that's the same straw I've seen before. The reptile guy said they weren't selling and he wasn't going to order any more, and that was back in mid November.

They seem real lethargic and quiet compared to CityZoo's straws back in October. Perhaps it's because they've been in petstore conditions for longer and are really stressed. They have mites too, but I'm not too worried because I have an order of preditory mites coming for all my tanks. Tiny has them again and I decided after I got back from my trip to give the beneficial mites a try.

I plan on making another second level in the office 40B and adding them to that tank. It currently only has 5 smalls and 2 mediums, so it has lots of room. The two teeny PPs I'm going to add to one of the 20L tanks, but I'm probably going to have to upgrade again real soon as fast as all my teenies are growing! Gee, I just might have to stop saving crabbies for the good of all the rest real soon! :tear:
