Hey guys, it's CrabHappy again! This time I'm back with my store checklist. I've read a bunch of the threads here already, but I would like some personal feedback, just to make sure that I'm getting things right.  :flower: Oh! I also found some really great, simple & inexpensive DIY ideas so I'll post those links too.

CrabHappy's Super Lovely Hermit Crab Supply List--

    10 Gallon Aquarium --- CHECK!

Aquarium lid with installed lighting --- CHECK!

Air Tubing, Air Pump, & Bubble Stone (for DIY humidifier)

    Water Dechlorinator

ZooMed ReptiTherm UTH [Any reviews out on these?]

Aquarium Salt (LBS per bag and price?)

Rock Hideys & Silk Plants (mostly silk ivy) --- CHECK!

    2 Water Dishes --- CHECK!

    1 Food Dish --- CHECK!

    Suction Cups

    Extra Shells

Temperature & Humidity Dual Gauge --- CHECK!

    All done, yay!  :cheer:

Feedback and ideas = mucho appreciated. In return, I'll love you forever AND shower you with tank pics.  :hermez2:

And now for great DIY links (I think you may have seen these before, but they're oh so helpful!)

welp i never used tubes bubblers air pumps, it's a personal thing, to each his or her own.. if you keep the tank humidity up you don't need these.
water dechlor i bought the kind at wal mart it has a picture of a turtle, lizard or frog on it. i would look it up and copy, paste it but i'm typing one handed, laid up right now.
yep i have zoo meds uth no troubles with them
aquarium salt is what ever wal mart sold and they don't now but i can find it still in my pet shop looks like a milk carton and blue
play sand from lowes is like 3.99* all naturall
i never used moss either, could never remember the right type then heard of people getting having bugs with the moss to and to me just an other added expense  i can ue for food or things they can really use.
you can use clay pots that have been scrubbed and rinsed for hideys to, fake flowers make sure they don't have the pollen look they can eat on them.. well i hope i helped ya little i have 3 crabs one original since 2009.

Yeah, I completely understand. A lot of it is just personal preference. I'm gonna go ahead and stick with building a humidifier because Texas can be so hot and bone dry. Thanks for all your suggestions, I think I know just where to find what I need.  :flower:

Tell me about your crabbies! What are their names & sizes?!

I think airpumps are a great idea. If you have time to swap your crabs water daily, that's cool. Personally I don't so I have an airpump for their water and an airpump for the humidifier.

shells I have a list I'll give you for mine at the bottom.

moss I got from PetCo for their pit but you could get the one from the addiction store.

don't forget stuff to climb! if you can get your hands on one of these: http://www.petco.com/product/12007/T-Rex-Crab-Island-Climbing-Background.aspx?CoreCat=LN_ReptileSupplies_HermitCrab_Decor
my crabs LOVE it. You'll wanna get more velcro for that though. some people also use the little grid thing for cross stitching as ladders and stuff.

I have almost no experience with sand, I have coconut fiber as a main terrain since PPs like to molt in that better than sand for some reason. Or mine do  :dontknow:

dechlorinator you can get at walmart or your local pet store

I wouldn't put  UTHs under your tank either, don't want to toast molting crabs =/ I think some of the others put them on the sides instead.

    Shells:
    http://www.seashellcity.com/seashells.html
    http://www.shells-of-aquarius.com/
    http://elsshells.com/ (doesn't have much)
http://naplesseashellcompany.com/ this one gives shell size openings
http://deltonaseashells.com/ this one doesn't give opening sizes but you can guestimate what you need.

The 2 â?¥'d are the ones i buy from most often.
With Deltona, the prices are cheap and a lot of shells come with more than 1 for the price. I actually have some spares I'll be selling from them. The only downside is that you don't know the openings just the shell size as a whole.
Naples was the first I started buying shells from. It's really easy to find the shells you need and the openings. They're slightly pricey but all their shells are pretty much the size they say.

http://godzillahermitcrab.deviantart.com/ has quite a bit of helpful info mixed into her dA account. She's really nice so don't be afraid to ask her questions too. She actually helped me make my shell list and taught me a bit about crab diet. Her tank is absolutely amazing too so I'd check it out.

Katz, I think you and I are gonna be gooooooood friends.  :hahahaha:

The GodzillaHermitCrab tip was such a good one! I had no idea how fascinated I would be until I went to the link and found her photography and the helpful info. Definitely appreciating that one!

I also went to the Deltona website and although it's a little jumbly because they DO sell so many things (apparently they're out of Orlando, go figure), I really liked the nice price for shells. Have you ordered from them before?

Hey Katz, do your crab babies actually climb the background? I'm definitely considering it but I'm just like, GAAAH. If they won't even use it, I don't want to waste my money on it. Does it help any with humidity?

Oh & any recommendations for a place that I can get some just, regular fishing net?

I bought $40 worth of shells from deltona lol so yea I buy XD

They climb the background and sleep and it helps a bit if you can get it to stay damp, mine holds in moisture. I just soaked it in  water for a half hour.
My crabs love it and my crickets do.
In Maine I have a lot of humidity issues so I have that, a little humidifier, and big water bowls (as well as wet cocofiber and sand) so for me every bit helps keep it around 70-75%

For net, do you have a Micheal's craft store? They sell net for about $10-$15

LOL is it any use to buy the big bag of assorted medium shells under the bulk section?
Hmm, I may get one! Trying to pinch pennies in every way possible right now! Student status, for the win. NOT.  :sad5:

Lol I hear ya. I'm a student too and jobless I use my loans to get them new stuff twice a year
    xD
you can try the bulk I don't know how big/small they are.
I bought mine individually but it's worth a shot on the money aspect.
I'm pretty sure theirs are mostly handpicked and packaged.

    http://deltonaseashells.com/inc/sdetail/91/265
    http://deltonaseashells.com/inc/sdetail/91/1559

look like they'll offer more that your crabs will be willing to wear
but I'd hold off buying till you know what size to get.

my crabs take a shell size of about 1-3in. with a shell opening of 1/2in-1in
when I got them they were between 1/4 and 1/2 inch openings so it was easier to find accommodating shells.

to give you an idea of what my crabs are wearing:
http://deltonaseashells.com/inc/sdetail/157/670 is what my medium is wearing with a 1" opening.
http://deltonaseashells.com/inc/sdetail/157/108407 is what my smallest is wearing
http://deltonaseashells.com/inc/sdetail/157/711 is what my 2 small crabs wore up until they needed 1/2in.
http://deltonaseashells.com/inc/sdetail/157/97853 is what hermes is wearing.
my medium also likes shells like http://deltonaseashells.com/inc/sdetail/66125
he cant choose between the 2 for some reason but he enjoys both types immensely.
I've been looking to find more natural shells like the ones they
came with so they're using pretty polished shells until then.

However this is my experience with bulks from big stores:
I bought a little bulk bag of shells from the craft store I got my net at and for months
I was putting the shells in and then I was boiling them one day and
I felt terrible since I had offered my crabs the shell without looking,
there was a dead crab in one of the shells I bought =<
So try not to get them from craft stores,
I realize that it was an accident but whoever the stores get their shells from don't check them for crabs,
it was obvious there was a crab there if you flipped it over and you could see it's little legs.
I know GodzillaHermitCrab ran into the same issue and it is saddening.
So make sure you clean and check the shells before offering them.

    I'm a sucker for my crabs =<

Deltona has some great prices, I just hate shipping and handling, sheesh!  :bat:

I think I may buy some shells from Vicki  :hail: when she gets restocked. That way I can buy all the yummy foods AND shells at the same time with one shipping. Savin' mooooney!

If I can get a S&H price I can sell a few to you for cheap, I have a bunch that my crabs just won't need anymore. Mine are all clean and stored in a 5 cup tupperware container

Sure! Pics? :) However, I probably wouldn't be buying them 'til around Jan if you'll still have 'em by then. I am getting my crabs when it warms up 'round here (Texas) & I think it's best that I have my crabs before I go buying shells for 'em so that I can see what they need. I think I'm going to stick with 1 medium crab and 2 smalls, if that's any clarification.  :flower:

lol it's no worries, I'll have them for awhile.
I'm getting more crabs in maybe May when it warms up here but I plan on getting more shells between now and then.
I'll take pics of the shells when I get home =]

Lol all I could come up with is Marco and Polo, Yin and Yang (and because I'm such a geek sometimes, Luke and Leia) ...maybe because it's late I'm having a hard time coming up with names  :noidea:
It really all depends on if you have a name theme and sometimes when you see them you may come up with a different name.
Mine are themed with Greek gods for instance so it was easy for me to come up with their names even though they turned out not matching their personalities.
