my hermies dont chirp =(
That's a good thing. Most of the time when they chirp they are in some kind of danger or distress. I have only heard one of mine chirp twice, and that was because there was a lot of pushing and shoving with another crab over one of the tunnel holes they both wanted.
My crabs don't really chirp but sometimes they make little squeak noises. I heard one last night because one of the cholla logs fell over on my crab and he was in the middle of it.
I've only heard mine chirp once and it was obviously a distress call. Had them in the critter carrier while I was cleaning their crabitat and Charlie was climbing all over Sydney... she didn't like that much! It was nice to finally here what chirping was though! I almost didn't believe it when I heard it! Had them for a year before it happened.
I made one of mine chirp yesterday She was sitting on a piece of cork bark and I had to move some greenery that she was under in order to get the food dish out, and it caused me to move her around, she started really chirping, I felt so bad!
Sounded like a small frog croaking. Chirping really isn't an accurate word for it, but I can't think of a better one!
mine dont chirp
It was SUPER weird a couple days ago. I picked Crisp up and he started chirping like mad. I showed my mom and then put him back but he was all sticking his head out of his shell chirping. I put him back, knowing something was wrong but he seems fine now.
was it high pitch? or low pitch i have never heard one
I hear noises coming from my hermies sometimes, but I can't tell if they are chirping or not. It is high-pitched and it sounds like their shells are creaking. Sometimes I pick them up and hear that noise, but they don't repeat it continuously. How do hermit crabs chirp? Do they rub their mouth pieces together or something like that?
I don't know. It sounded sort of like a... (loss of words) like a chirp. OK, sort of low pitch sort of clicking noise maybe. There are some videos on You tube. I'll put a link on here once I find one.
Just like this!

Less like this but sort of like it.

What? While I was looking on there look what I found!

Poor hermits. WAY over crowded!!!
Generally Hermit crabs only chirp when they are agitated or upset, or feeling threatened. If you pick up your crab and it's chirping, it's definitely not happy.
The theory is that they are scraping a leg on the inside of their shell to make that noise. It's not really known how they make the noise.
So if your hermies don't chirp, that's a good thing.
Ohhhhhhhhh, that's how they do it! The noise sounded exactly like they were rubbing their leg against their shell! Oh no my hermit crabs aren't as happy as I thought!
Sometimes my hermies used to chirp cause they were talking or just sheer joy over something. I had only one distress call, and one that was so happy in the middle of the night he started singing like a cricket!! As soon as I poked my head into the tank he quit. Whenever I'd pick them up they'd click at me as I put them on my hand and Mommy would say that they were talking to me.
One of my crabs likes to scrape his claw against a certain ridged shell and it makes a funny sound. He's not really chirping though.
Yeah, I've heard somewhere that sometimes E's chirp just to talk to each other.
Really? I heard it was just distress call like the time a log fell down in my tank.
Maybe it's like a quieter chirp then... I don't know. I only saw it in one place so it could be false info.
