Deep Cleans of the 20L and the 37G

Why do I INSIST on doing BOTH tanks in one day???  Took me 5.5 hours to do both tanks and that was with the HELP of my husband Jeff.  YIKES!   :eek:mg:

Started off rinsing and baking the sand.   My husband says I make the BEST baked sand

And boiled shells in the world.

Then on went the latex gloves and I held my breath as I disassmebled the 20L and started hunting for the inhabitants.  We lost Lilo.  From what I could tell she molted fine, but this one didn't go well.  I would have had her ONE YEAR next week.   :angel12:

The other 16 inhabitants were just fine tho.

After my husband dumped and hosed out the tanks, I washed them down with vinegar and water.  Then added the sand and the EE.

Here's the CLEAN 20L

The 37G was trickier because it took both of us to haul it outside and dump it.   Then to bring it back in.  I litereally have to stand on a step stool to work in this tank!  This tank houses my large crabs and all 9 of them were stuffed into the iso until I was done!  It was a bit croweded to say the least.

I think I'm going to put my feet up and relax now, cuz it took me ANOTHER hour and a half to disinfect my kitchen, vaccuum and put everything away!!!

Whew.

I'd lost both the large straws I bought two months ago.  Not a big surprise as they were pretty beat up to begin with.  I've decided, no more large straws for me...They don't molt well for me.  I don't know what happens.  I found a lot of Straw exo, but no bodies...so when they went down right away, they must have tried to molt and just didn't make it.  :(  I wish I knew what I do wrong for them.

Looks great Wick- why do you boil the shells? I hear that really breaks the shell down just curious- I used to get alot of holes from doing that especially the ones I spent the most money on  :BangHead: when i get back from home weekend after next I will work on my 75g- there is no way on earth I would do more than one tank in a day- what it took you to do 2 takes me more to do one (say the 75) the 40B takes about that long-ish. it is a huge project. I hauled the 40B outside myself and have the scar to show for it- I sliced my leg -- I still dont know how  :think:

Nothing like a clean tank--go soak in the tubbie and relax~ :sunny:

3. I boiled them this time because a couple of them were the straws' shells and I didn't want the bacteria.  That and the last load of moss I got was LOADED with springtails so I wanted to disinfect and KILL KILL KILL every bug I could!

NEVER NEVER NEVER buy EXOTERRA moss!  EVER!!!!!

NO I haul an empty tank outside-I never could before I had 3 flights of steps. and I am sure I wont be doing that to the 75 very often  :idunno:

7. We dump the ee and sand into the garden.  It makes good compost.

Especially with all the crabby poops, cuz I don't have a fance POOPY-VAC like Hermez does.

Wow!!!!!! :sunny: Great job on the tanks Wick! Considering you did both tanks in the same day, 5 1/2 hours isn't bad.
Sorry about the crabbies you lost  :huggies:

Hermez, I remember your post a while back about the Hoover for poopers, but can't remember where you picked it up from. I need to get one, should be great for picking up substrate off the gravel section.

can you really have 16 crabs in a 20L??? if so, i can probably get a lot more crabs!

16. My crabs run from micro to smalls.  Once they hit medium, they're  bumped up to the  upper tank.  Most of them are the size of a nickle.

oh. i have like hmmm, let me see 1 large, 1 medium, and 5 smalls? i tink, in a 29 gal.

18. Girls, correct me if I'm wrong but isn't the rough guideline like:
large = 3 gal/per crab
medium = 2 gal/crab
small = 1 gal/crab
little guys = .5 gal/crab

But you always want to leave a couple of gallons for growth etc.

so, a 10 gal could hold 2 larges (although I don't recommend that because of the depth of sand - lol)
or 4 mediums
or 8 smalls.
etc.

The 20L has the same footprint of a 29 gal.  So I go with that.

Right now you have
1 large = 3 gal
1 medium = 2 gal
5 smalls = 10 gal

So right now you are at 15 gallons.  You could probably go with a couple more mediums and another large be just fine.
