Alright, mom insisted on choosing the substrate for my hermit tank.  She put 3 or so bags of that dyed crayola play sand into the crabitat.

I figured the crabs would be fine, since its just sandbox sand, and plus it was made for small children, and if its child safe then it shouldnt hurt the crabs

Have you guys had any experience with this stuff?

(I'll get some pics after I find my camera)

There is a question about the dye they use to 'color' the sand. Many things that are safe of children are not save for hermies.

I have emailed the company and I will post what the response is.

Oh, how cool!  :chuckle: Just leave the colored sand in there and be sure to tell your Mom how pretty it looks otherwise she'll have hurt feelings.  :yes2:

Nah, its a 50/50 mix of deep blue and sea-foam green.

Just imagine if Rachel-Ray was asked to decorate a hermit tank.  This would be the result

I know you have a camera mister so I am expecting pics NOW!  :bat:

Not sure how well I'd trust the sand, so keep us posted!

This is the response I got:

They do not state the actual kind of dye used probably because of 'trade secret' thing.

Since this lady does use it for her betas, I would think that it is okay to use with hermit crabs.  Just let me know about any problems after a molt as that is the test.

  10. hi newbie here.. i have five PP and use the colored play sand as that is all i can find around here. my crabs have no problems from taking their bath then stepping out on the sand.. they do get little blue legs once in awhile but no harm done.

I know this is a slightly old topic but I just wanted to let you know that the colored sand was my first purchase for my tank because it looked better than the natural sand they were selling. Anyways I had two crabs molt in the sand and come up in good health, if that info helps any.

Same here, I had the purple and I had 2 molters and they were successful.  I have since changed to regular play sand because I wanted a more natural look to my tank.  I did love the purple however.
