alright, this was something I did a while back, we used oven bake clay to sculpt a hermie, baked the sculputre (NO SHELL IN THE OVEN PEOPLE) and then put the cooled baked clay hermie into an empty shell. I used saftey wire painted black to make the antenna.

I am sure all sorts of garnishes could be used, but thats what I think a kid would like to do this year.
You get an ornament for the tree, and the kids get to make a mess, and its hermit crab related, you cant beat that

alright, I have what I need to put a strawberry crab in this MASSIVE black murex shell that I have had forever. It is entirely to big and heavy for a real hermit to wear anyway

I'll post pics and what not later tonight

    It looks great! :drooltongue:

I might do something like this with my daughter...I wonder if the self drying clay would be good to make little hermies to fit in little shells for Christmas ornaments?

That looks really cool, and I have a real straw in the same shell, and about the same size, if not exact size to your real one.

I just thought of a cool way you could BLING your clay hermie! :hermez2:

Instead of painting dots on it you could glue little tiny fake gems/crystals on him and put larger gems for the eyes :biglaugh:

the story of my life, I come up with all kinds of ideas, and yet someone else always has it before me :noidea: :noidea: :noidea:

I ought to have been a cave-man, this way mankind would have had steam/electric technology 2000 years earlier

Aww, your crab looks sooo good! I used to make polymer clay crabs all the time to sell on eBay and online places. I always wanted to try using real shells. I would just sculpt my own (I always made moon shells or turbos, LOL).

Anyway, cool idea. I love the way yours came out. And they don't have to be Christmas ornaments only. I keep them all around my house year round. :D
