Somebody brought the suggestion up to me of using beach sand, and cooking it in the microwave. Is that safe for the crabs and my microwave. I know I usually buy calcuim sand. But real hermies live on the beach don't they????

I have used beach sand before...I just baked it in the oven until it was completely dried out
[IMG] When I put it in the tank I wet it down a little and by morning--there were tunnels going in and out EVERYWHERE! My crabs loved it.
