That looks pretty good. And once you get the net up, awesome. What are you using to make the net? Hemp is the best. And once you are done, dip it in salt water, squeeze out the excess and you are set.

Yes, I used hemp. I didn't do anything with the salt water, though. =/ Is it super important? Also, I'm getting a 20 gallon soon!! :]

    Shells: Painted or Natural?

Every time I've had hermies, I've used painted shells.
Now alot of books and things are saying painted shells are bad.
    Is there a difference?
    Can it kill them?:(
    Please Reply and Thanks!

    Umm this is really weird

My PP dug a hole, and goes in it every night.
He didn't molt though, and isn't showing any signs of molting.
My old PP's never did this before, is it natural?

Using boiling salt water on crab stuff* is like using soap on our hands. Not only that, it will make it enticing for the crabs - the salty smell :D

*plastic items should be just dipped as it may melt.

    Re: Shells: Painted or Natural?

Yes there is a difference. Painted shells are toxic to crabs and have been painted crazy colors. It's easy to spot a painted shell. Now the natural shells are those that haven't been tampered with. These are the ones that you'd likely find on a beach as I doubt you'd find a painted shell on the beach unless its been put there by humans. :) Hope that helps!

He's probably just sleeping in it. My smallest two do that all the time because Tony took over the castle. :]

Maybe a few turbos that are closer to their current shell size.

Hermielover - I am sorry :( I didn't see your posts and I don't know why. Hermie's rule is right about the reason why painted shells are bad. After they dig down the abrasion of the substrate will scratch the paint and it will start to peel. That's where the hermie might decide to taste it.

As for your PP digging... he is comfortable there. This is normal. I have four that dig down during the day and come up at night to eat, drink and play.

Can you make your own salt water? Because I don't live near the ocean. How much salt to how much water?

If you go to your local petstore they will have salt for salt water aquariums, we use that. If you get Oceanic (which is what I use and it is the cheapest around $4) you take an empty milk container and rinse it well with hot water (no soap), or you can even go buy a 1 gallon jug of water and add 8 tablespoons for the 1 gallon. If you use the empty milk container and tap water you also need to use a dechlorinator that you can also get in the fish dept. Some people even when using bottled water use the dechlorinator anyways. It is cheap anyways and lasts a long time. The other brand others use is Instant Ocean which is a bit pricy but I don't know how to mix it. Someone can give you directions on how to mix it.

I just received my shipment of Instant Ocean and was wondering on how to mix it too. It says on the box to mix 1/2 cup of salt to 1 gallon of dechlorinated water. Sorry, didn't meen to post. Post on bottom.

It also says something about "Recommended Specific Gravity Range". What is this and should I worry about it? I think it is just for aquariums and I should just ignore it. Also, can I mix 1/4 cup to 1/2 gallon? Does this effect it?

I use instant ocean and use a wee bit more of a 1/2 cup per gallon as I have a couple of strawberry's in my tank. I don't see what the problem would be if you mixed 1/4 cup to 1/2 gallon of water. It seems to me, that it would be the same salanity (SP)
