Howard, my first hermit crab. He's aborable, he's healthy, he has tank mates, etc.

    But there's one problem :
He's literally living off of popcorn!

Everyday I cut up a selection of various vegetables, and even cook some shimp and cut that up. It's all fresh, but he never goes for it. Aren't crabs supposed love this stuff?!

Then I put a piece of popcorn in. 10 seconds later, there's Howard picking off pieces. It's cute he loves popcorn, but he needs other nutrients.

Do you have a picky crab, or know a good recipe?
Or am I just doing something wrong?

If he goes for popcorn, try some corn. If he's like a picky child, just keep offering it to him.

    Kay, thanks!

Still eating popcorn, ahhhh... I'll make another salad tonight.
Even little Ace picked up on Howard's bad habits, haha.

Ha, ha...little buggers! I can't even tell if I have any picky crabs. They do prefer apples though.

If you go to epicureanhermit.com - Home you'll find a wealth of recipes you can make for crabs. There's also a list of safe foods for hermies. In addition, there are websites where you can buy crab tested food made and ready to go.

Popcorn is fine, but as you know, not as a steady diet.

Popcorn has celluose, if he's eating a lot of it means he's needing it. Try offering more items like that. Such as leaves, barks, mangrove.

Try foods that are a bit on the stinky side. Fish, shrimp, eggs have a potent odor. I feed mine dry anchovies, they make me gag but the crabs drag them out of the bowl really fast.

They can have plain unsalted/unbuttered popcorn. I have an airpopper I got at a thrift store for $3.

I have one of those. If you have olive oil, coconut oil, sesame seed oil etc you can also make the popcorn that way. Make sure the oils safe for hermit crabs. Put some kernals in a brown lunch bag, drizzle some oil on them and pop away. Make sure you dont burn it.

Thanks for the advice vckums. :]
I pop my popcorn in an air popper- no butter, salt, whatever.

I think he's pretty good now since I seen him nibbling on some apples a celery when I left.
I still give them popcorn everytime I have some. Haha, which is like all the time. :]

LMBO Is that why my kernals won't pop? I've tried with lunch bags and envelopes and others get them to pop but I can't. Never added oil though.
